Písal kultúrnohistorické a osvetové články do Katolíckych novín, Kazateľa a Tovaryšstva. Pápež ho ustanovil za apoštolského protonotára. Pochovaný je v krypte katolíckeho cintorína.

After finishing the grammar school in Banská Bystrica, he studied theology at the university in Vienna. He was ordained in 1876 and started working as a chaplain in Staré Hory, but one year later he was already teaching theology at the seminary in Banská Bystrica and eventually became its prefect and the parish priest in Banská Bystrica (1898). During World War I he prevented the requisition of the largest bell, known as the General, and its impressive sound can therefore still be heard from the barbican today. After the discharge of the pro-Hungarian bishop Wolfgang Radnai (1919), Ján Kohúth managed the diocese in the position of the chapter vicar. He remained the parish priest of Banská Bystrica until his death, holding the post for an extraordinary 32 years. He was highly respected. Pavel Hrúz and other authors recorded multiple stories showing Ján Kohúth as a wise, respected and sensitive person with a sense of humour. Ján Kohúth also wrote articles on history, culture and education for the Catholic magazines Katolícke noviny, Kazateľ and Tovaryšstvo. He was appointed protonotary apostolic by the Pope. He is buried in the crypt in the Catholic Cemetery.
